Could Siuslaw move down in football again?

The Siuslaw Vikings football program played down a classification last season, and will do so again in 2020.

Then what?

The school could be playing down two classifications in the near future.

Such a scenario is under consideration by the Oregon School Activities Association, and will be discussed at the Delegate Assembly meeting April 8 in Wilsonville.

The agenda for the meeting includes a discussion by the Football Ad Hoc Committee on the following:

  • This group has already created criteria that allowed football programs to play down a classification based on previous results. While looking at a process for how those football programs that have moved down would move back up a classification, they are also considering creation of criteria that would require very successful football programs to play up a classification. Additionally, they are also examining whether football programs that have moved down and remain very unsuccessful should have the option to play down a 2nd classification.

  • Do you support creation of a policy that would allow football programs that have moved down but remain very unsuccessful the option to play down a 2nd classification? Do you support creation of a policy that would require very successful football programs to play up a classification?

The Vikings were 0-8 in their first season in 3A football, finishing ranked No. 29 among 29 schools.

Siuslaw was 1-7 in 2017 and ranked No. 37 of 39 4A schools and 2-6 and ranked No. 27 of 38 4A schools in 2016.

When the OSAA unveiled its reclassification and districting plan for last fall, four 4A schools — Madras, Corbett, Hidden Valley and Siuslaw — were allowed to move down to 3A in football for at least two seasons.

Hidden Valley and Madras were each 6-4, while Corbett was 1-8, and perhaps facing the same double demotion as Siuslaw.

The most likely 2A landing for Siuslaw would be Special District 4, which currently includes Coquille, Bandon, Toledo, Gold Beach/Pacific and Reedsport.

The coming season will be the second for coach Chad Smith, who should be expecting improvement. Junior varsity and middle school teams had good seasons in 2018, so help is on the way.

Also, the Vikings lose only five players to graduation, so returning players will have a full season of Smith's offensive and defensive schemes to build on.

Other discussion topics include revamping the computation of school enrollment (ADM) and the future sanctioning of "emerging activities" such as lacrosse, e-sports and drama.
