Goodbye Clatskanie, hello Mac-Hi.

The Siuslaw Vikings football game scheduled for Sept. 27 at Clatskanie has been cancelled.

Instead, the Vikings will play the McLoughlin Pioneers at a neutral site in Central Oregon, likely on Saturday, Sept. 28.

McLoughlin was 0-8 overall and 0-6 in the 4A Greater Oregon League last fall. The Pioneers were outscored, 376-38.

"Things unraveled for 4A football when McLoughlin was granted independent status," Siuslaw athletic director Chris Johnson said.

The OSAA executive board voted in February to grant Mac-Hi's Independent Status Petition for the 2019 fall season.

"The (Executive) Board instructed staff to send a letter to 5A, 4A and 3A schools across the state requesting help for the remaining Greater Oregon League schools (Baker, La Grande and Ontario) to fill their schedules with this late change," according to an OSAA summary of the February meeting.

The Greater Oregon League had changed its annual schedule to two games against each other last fall, so each of the three remaining league teams has two openings to fill.

The OSAA still expects McLoughlin to fill one of those openings as a nonleague opponent.

McLoughlin has a 5-17 record the past three seasons, and hasn't won a 4A game since beating Sisters in 2013, according to The (Ontario, Oregon) Argus Observer. It hasn't won a league game in more than a decade, according to a school official.

It was expected that changes in districts and classifications would settle scheduling questions for four years, beginning with this school year, but apparently not so.

The OSAA's Football Ad Hoc Committee is looking at plans to allow schools to play down two classifications as early as 2020.

Siuslaw, already playing down one classification in football, might have that option, depending on the outcome of the 2019 season.

The committee also is considering criteria to allow teams to play up a classification.
