Spartans work overtime to sweep Vikings

The Marist Catholic Spartans had to rally in both games Friday to pull out a sweep of the Siuslaw Vikings in a Sky-Em League doubleheader at Dodson Field.

The Spartans pushed across five runs in the top of the eighth inning to win the opener, 7-6, then bounced back from a 6-4 deficit through three innings to win the nightcap, 9-6.

Siuslaw, 0-9 in league and 1-15 overall, plays Tuesday at Junction City and has a doubleheader Friday at Cottage Grove.

Marist Catholic improved to 7-2 and 11-6.

In the opener, Vikings sophomore catcher Elijah Blankenship was 3-for-5 with a double, 2 RBIs and a stolen base. Junior Caleb Tennessee was 2-for-5 with 2 stolen bases; junior Jared Northrop had 2 runs, an RBI and a double; sophomore Dalton Stinger had a triple and a run and Chayton James had a run and an RBI.

"I was really happy with our approaches at the plate for most of the game," Siuslaw coach Tom Shinn said. "We did a better job in this game of putting the ball in play.

"Defensively we played fairly well. However, of the seven runs they scored only one was earned. Errors came at poor times that led to our pitchers needing to throw extra pitches."

In the nightcap, senior Tim Lowder was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs, Northrop 2-for-2 with a run, Blankenship had a run, RBI and a double and freshman Henry Rankin had a double and 2 RBIs.

"Again, we did a much better job of putting the ball in play," Shinn said. "Our approach at the plate was to make the pitcher work. We extended counts several times.

"Jared Northrop had a very productive game at the plate. It was good to see Tim Lowder have success at the plate.

"Henry Rankin swung up from JV and had a very good night at the plate."

Vikings senior left-hander Gabe Simington, the Game 1 starter, worked 6 1-3 innings, striking out 7 and yielding 2 runs, 1 earned.

In the second game, Vikings starter Dalton Stinger struck out 8 in 4 2-3 innings.
