Beach soccer tourney in Florence cancelled

The Copa Cabana Beach Soccer Tournament will not be returning to Florence this year.

Or maybe ever.

"We've cancelled it, and now we have two empty spots on our calendar in the middle of our season," Copa Cabana Sports operator Christiaan Wagner said Wednesday.

The 5-on-5 event played to good reviews last June, and Copa Cabana Sports penciled it in for a return June 22-23, again fronting Driftwood Shores Resorts.

"The hotel loved us, the Chamber of Commerce in Eugene loved us," Wagner said.

"We started the registration process in March, sending out emails and making phone calls, but we got absolutely no response."

There also was indicated interest from organizations in Newport for the following weekend, June 29-30.

"They showed a lot of interest early, then stopped responding," Wagner said. "No replies to emails, no callbacks."

Wagner wasn't sure who dropped the ball, but now there will be no Copa Cabana organized events on the Oregon Coast this year.

Most of the Copa Cabana's tournaments are in California. Huntington Beach held a tournament last weekend, and the next is this weekend in Port Hueneme/Oxnard.

"We will come back (to Oregon) if there is interest," he said. "But there has to be interest."
