Practice starts Monday for fall sports for the Siuslaw Vikings cross country, football, girls volleyball and boys junior-varsity soccer teams.

It's also the start of a longer haul for members of the band, choir and cheerleading, each of which have state championships in the second half of the school year.

Practice for bowling — which is not sanctioned by the Oregon School Activities Association — begins in October.

Football has its first event at noon Saturday, Aug. 24, with the Blue-Gold Game at Hans Petersen Memorial Field.

Volleyball opens its season Thursday, Aug. 29, at North Bend, while cross country has its first run Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Spartan Invitational in Eugene.

The first meeting of the school year for the Siuslaw Athletic Booster Club is 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26, at the high school library.

This week's Siuslaw practice times, according to Coos Bay World:

• Cheerleading: 8-11 a.m. Monday through Friday, high school main gym.
• Cross Country: 9:58 a.m. (track) and 4:13 p.m. (East Woahink) on Monday; 4:13 p.m. (Sutton Boat Launch) on Tuesday; 8:58 a.m. (track) and 4:13 p.m. (Holman Vista) on Wednesday; 8:58 a.m. (Siltcoos Trail) on Thursday; 8:58 a.m. (East Woahink) on Friday.
• Football: Daily doubles, times not available, high school practice field.
• Soccer: 8-10:30 a.m. Monday through Friday and 5:30-6:30 p.m. Monday or Tuesday and Thursday, Miller Park.
• Volleyball: 9-11 a.m. and 2-5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and 9 a.m.-noon Tuesday and Thursday, Siuslaw gyms.
