North Bend rallies to beat Siuslaw in 5 sets

The Siuslaw Vikings girls volleyball team is off to an encouraging if unsuccessful start.

Thursday, the Class 4A Lady Vikings dropped a 3-2 nonleague decision to the Class 5A North Bend Bulldogs at the North Bend Middle School gym.

The Lady Bulldogs rallied to win 16-25, 25-18, 19-25, 25-19, 15-13.

"We started out really strong in the first set and were rolling when we started the second set," Siuslaw coach Jon Hornung said. "

"I think the girls started feeling the pressure of playing and made a ton of mental mistakes. We missed a lot of serves in the second set and made a couple of other mental errors.

"Those errors ultimately were the difference in that set. We came back strong in set three, and again were rolling in the fourth set until Desi Tupua went down with an ankle injury. We struggled to fill her absence and dropped the fourth and fifth sets.

"Lindsey Long played great in the back row and Desi began her high school career with a bang and was killing it while she was in. Mia (Collins) led the team in kills and was solid all around."

Siuslaw freshman middle blocker Desi Tupua had 7 kills, 7 blocks and 3 aces and senior outside hitter Mia Collins 12 kills for the Lady Vikings.

Junior outside hitter Kya Blake added 7 kills, 2 aces and 2 blocks, senior right side Elissa Hurley 5 kills and 5 blocks and junior middle blocker Delaney Foglio 6 blocks and 3 kills.

"There were a lot of positives, but we really need to focus and clean up the mental mistakes going forward," Hornung said.

"We're planning on playing around with the lineup (Friday) against Bandon and Douglas. When Desi went down I realized quickly how thin we are on numbers, so we need to make sure every player can play every position."

Sophomore setter Olivia Knutson had 7 aces, 6 kills and 4 stuff blocks to lead North Bend. The Siuslaw match was the start and finish of preleague play for the Bulldogs, who open league play Tuesday with a home match against Willamette.

The Lady Vikings play Bandon at noon and Douglas at 4 p.m. Friday (Aug. 30) at Glenn Butler Court.

DOUBLE DUTY

Freshmen Hailee Outlaw and Desi Tupua and sophomores Zoe Alberte and Hayden Muller are listed on the Vikings varsity and junior varsity teams.

Filling out the eight-player JV are freshman Hali Corbin and sophomores Gracie Perkins, Taylor Daugherty and Alizabeth North.

Siuslaw graduate Lona Denger is coach of the Lady Vikings JV.
