Sutherlin shocks Lady Vikings in five sets

Sophomore libero Hayden Muller had 36 digs Thursday against Sutherlin.

Sutherlin won the final two sets, including 15-13 in the decisive fifth, to stun the Siuslaw Vikings, 3-2, in a nonleague girls volleyball match at Glenn Butler Court.

The Lady Bulldogs won 25-27, 25-21, 22-25, 25-22, 15-13 to improve to 2-4 and snap a four-match losing streak.

The Lady Vikings, 3-2, next open Sky-Em League play, traveling to Cottage Grove this coming Thursday. First serve is 6:30 p.m.

"I had a feeling tonight's match wasn't going to be as easy as some people were expecting," Siuslaw coach Jon Hornung said. "Sutherlin got a transfer student from Roseburg who was playing in her first match tonight and she was far and away their best player.

"We started off super amped up and had a hard time reigning in our excitement and it showed with our missed serves in set 1. We've been working really hard on making sure we don't give away points, but today we gave way points at the service line at really inopportune times, like late in sets or when we have our strongest hitters in the front row.

"We had some sloppy play that I wasn't expecting because we've been playing pretty well up to this point and I thought that we had fixed some of these issues. We had our chances in each set, but didn't capitalize on them.

"The back row play of Hayden (Muller) and Lindsey (Long) kept us in points. Hayden had 36 digs and Lindsey had 14. We had stretches where our hitters were unstoppable, but late in sets I think the pressure got to us and we started playing to not mess up rather than playing to win.

"Sutherlin had a quicker offense than we've seen all year and we weren't fast enough getting outside to block which opened up a lot of holes in our defense that Sutherlin capitalized on. It was a good tune up before league starts because it gives a good indication of what we need to work on before next week.

"This was the biggest hitter we've seen all year, and every team in the Sky-Em is going to have at least one player like we saw today, so it gives us a target to shoot for if we want to be competitive in league."

Senior outside hitter Mia Collins had a big match with 16 kills, 9 digs, 3 blocks and an ace. She also had 10 errors on 47 swings and finished with a hitting percentage of .128.

Junior outside hitter Kya Blake had 11 kills and 2 digs, freshman middle blocker Desi Tupua had 8 kills, 2 blocks and an ace, sophomore libero Hayden Muller had 36 digs and junior defensive specialist Lindsey Long 14 digs.

Blake had 6 errors on 34 swings for a hitting percentage of .147, while Tupua had 4 errors on 28 attempts and hit .143.

The Lady Vikings as a team hit .161, totaling 48 kills with 24 errors on 149 swings for the night.

The win snapped Siuslaw's three-match win streak, the longest in best-of-five series since the end of the 2016 season when the Lady Vikings qualified for the state playoffs.
