Vikings club Newport 42-20, improve to 2-1

Sophomore wide receiver Braydon Thornton caught three TD passes Friday against Newport.

Siuslaw junior quarterback Elijah Blankenship passed for two touchdowns and ran for three short scores Friday to lead the Vikings to a 42-20 nonleague football victory over the Newport Cubs at Hans Petersen Memorial Field.

The Vikings, 2-1 in their turnaround season, travel to Madras next Saturday, Sept. 28, to play the independent 4A McLoughlin Pioneers (1-2).

Newport, a 4A state playoff team last season, fell to 0-3. The Cubs host Philomath this coming Friday in an Oregon West Conference opener.

Siuslaw scored in every quarter as the Vikings' offense purred along, despite four lost fumbles. Siuslaw also gifted the Cubs by failing to cover an onside kick.

The Vikings burst out of the gate with Blankenship-to-Braydon Thornton TD passes of 32 and 34 yards. The first score came on a five-play drive to open the game and the second two plays after Camp Lacouture returned an interception 29 yards to the Newport 41.

Less than four minutes into the game, Siuslaw led 12-0.

Newport struck back with a vengeance to take a 14-12 lead after the first quarter on two touchdown passes from freshman Marcus Everitt to senior Austin Perry.

Perry got behind the Vikings' defense for a 61-yard scoring play with 6:51 to go in the first quarter. Newport recovered the onside kick and Everitt connected with Perry for a 34-yard TD at 3:57 of the quarter.

Sophomore kicker Kaden Bruns squeezed a pair of extra-point kicks just over the cross bar and the Cubs took a 14-12 lead into the second quarter.

Blankenship and Lacouture each scored on short runs in the second quarter as the Vikings took a 24-14 lead into halftime despite fumbling the ball away three times, including two in a bizarre sequence in which possession changed hands three times in three plays.

Siuslaw expanded its lead to 36-14 as Blankenship scored on two short runs, from the 3 with 7:07 to play in the third quarter and from the 2 with 11:24 left in the fourth.

Everitt tossed his third TD of the game with 2:46 left in the game, hitting senior tight end Luke Losier from the 8 for the score.

Siuslaw tacked on its final score with 34 seconds to play, Lacouture connecting with Thornton from 41 yards out.

The win avenged a 60-16 defeat to the Cubs last season in Newport.
