Siuslaw junior Jaxson Jensen scored a late goal Thursday to lift the Vikings soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Marist Catholic in Eugene.

Siuslaw improved to 3-0 for the season with five matches to play, including two next week.

The Vikings play at Cottage Grove on Tuesday and at Marshfield next Thursday.

"The entire defense played great, shutting down attacks and keeping the Spartans out of scoring range for most of the game," Siuslaw coach Londi Tomaro said.

"The mids and forwards did a great job moving the ball to space and making runs."

Siuslaw sophomore goalkeeper Kayden Lane had nine saves.

"Kayden played the entire game in goal and did an incredible job," Tomaro said. "He made fantastic saves!"

Jensen had five shots on goal, while freshmen Noel Hernandez and Yoskar Delamora and sophomore Jason Garcia had two shots each.

Siuslaw took a 1-0 lead in the first half on an own goal by Marist off a corner kick by Hernandez.

Marist tied the game with a goal midway through the second half when two Spartan forwards got past the Vikings defense.

"The game was pretty much even from the start. Possession went back and forth throughout the game," Tomaro said.

"It was a very physical game, but our players stepped up and continued to make good plays and maintain pressure."

NOTE

Siuslaw has added an eighth match to its schedule, playing Oct. 15 at Newport/Eddyville Charter.
