No. 1 Vikings boys fourth at Springfield


Siuslaw senior Brendon Jensen had the top time for the top-ranked Vikings team.

The Siuslaw Vikings boys cross country team, ranked No. 1 in Class 4A, finished fourth Saturday at the Springfield Invitational.

Siuslaw was the top Class 4A school, finishing fourth overall with 132 points. Crater had 61, Crescent Valley 78 and Grants Pass 90.

Crater is ranked No. 2 in the 5A coaches' poll, with Crescent Valley No. 9. Grants Pass is an unranked 6A school.

Marist Catholic, the No. 2-ranked 4A school, was 10th overall with 287, while Junction City had 317 for 13th and Marshfield 376 for 15th.

Siuslaw senior Brendon Jensen had the top time for the Vikings, finishing in 17 minutes, 1.3 seconds to place eighth overall.

Freshman Samuel Ulrich ran 17:35, sophomore Chad Hughes a personal-record 17:49.1, senior Jared Northrop a season-best 17:54.9 and freshman Kyle Hughes 17:57.1 to place 21, 30, 36 and 40 to complete the top five Siuslaw times.

Junior Jaxson Jensen finished 43rd in 18:05.7 and senior Kiger Johnson 44th in 18:09.9.

Sophomore Blake Byer of Crescent Valley won in 16:03.3, with North Bend's Alexander Garcia-Silver second in 16:26.1.
