Siuslaw soccer has its own field of dreams

Siuslaw coaches Londi Tomaro and Nyra Campbell

Siuslaw soccer coaches Londi Tomaro and Nyra Campbell may be on Cloud 10.

They have been on Cloud 9 all season as the Vikings have gone 6-0, including a sweep of the five Sky-Em League junior varsity boys teams.

Saturday it gets better, when Siuslaw hosts its first-ever home match. Kickoff with Waldport is 10 a.m. at the new Siuslaw High School field.

"Having our own home field is amazing," Tomaro said. "It feels like coming home.

"Our players no longer have to leave school to attend practices. We will be able to host home games."

The Vikings' coed team is in its second season competing at the boys JV level. Next season, Siuslaw will field a coed team at the varsity level in the Sky-Em League.

"To me, it makes it feel real, it makes it feel like there is a future," Campbell added, "and like it's no longer a question of whether or not what we're building is sustainable and long term.

"It feels like we're being accepted, and not pushed out."

It's been a bit of a slog for the program, which has its roots in Boys & Girls Club play and, more recently, the Siuslaw Youth Soccer Association, which prefers recreational play over the more competitive brand.

Siuslaw played all five of its matches on the road last season, finishing 0-4-1, and the first six this season away.

Now the Vikings have a real home and a real future.

"We are anticipating two teams next year (varsity and JV), and having a full field to practice on will be hugely beneficial," Tomaro said.

"We will be able to separate offense and defense for drills, or have varsity and JV working on different things or play a full field scrimmage to prep for games.

"It is incredibly exciting."

The Siuslaw School District has made a major commitment to the sport, and the development of the field has generated community support, including a donation of $3,300 from the Florence Dental Clinic to fund goals at the new venue.

"This is a wonderful step for our program," Tomaro said.

A wonderful step for the program, and giant leap for community wide acceptance.

"I feel welcomed, and I think our athletes do, also," Campbell said. "They've worked hard, and for that are being given their own space — something tangible and real from all this work we and they have put in.

"I'm excited. Very excited!"
