Freshmen fuel Vikings' third-place finish


Freshman Samuel Ulrich was the second-fastest Viking with a personal record time.

Freshmen Samuel Ulrich and Kyle Hughes and sophomore Chad Hughes ran personal records Saturday to lead the Siuslaw Vikings boys to a third-place finish in the Paul Mariman Invitational cross country meet in Philomath.

Host Philomath won the team title with 59, followed by Sisters with 70, Siuslaw with 83 and Marist Catholic with 98.

Siuslaw senior Brendon Jensen had the top Vikings time of 16 minutes, 41.1 seconds. Ulrich was 17th in 17:12.7, senior Kiger Johnson 19th in a season-best 17:19.5, Kyle Hughes 20th in 17:23.8 and Chad Hughes 21st in 17:24.7.

Senior Jared Northrop was the sixth Viking and 24th overall in a PR 17:27.7 and junior Ryan Jennings 42nd in a season-best 18:01.2.

Sisters junior John Peckham won the individual title in 16:17.9.

The Vikings will compete this coming Saturday at the Warner Pacific XC Classic at Lents Park in Portland.

The final race before championship season is The Run for the Brownies, Thursday, Oct. 24, at Florence Golf Links.

The Sky-Em League Championships are Thursday, Oct. 31, and the Oregon School Athletic Association Class 4A state championships Saturday, Nov. 9, both at Lane Community College in Eugene.

BOYS JUNIOR VARSITY

Siuslaw was fifth of eight teams in the boys junior varsity race.

Freshman Jacob Blankenship ran 18:38.10 for 18th, freshman Cayden Gray 18:46.08 for 19th, freshman Kevin Holloway 20:33.65 for 32nd, freshman Matt Mans 21:35.69 for 48th and sophomore JC Gentry 22:19.76 for 59th.
