Vikings score a tie and a big win for soccer

The first-ever Siuslaw Vikings soccer match at home was a tie and a big success.

"We had a great crowd," Siuslaw coach Londi Tomaro said. "Fans lined the spectator side of the field, as well as the fence behind the team benches.

"It was exciting for us and the team to play on our own field and in front of family and friends."

It was the first match on the Siuslaw campus, the pitch overlaying the junior varsity baseball field and featuring new goalposts thanks to a donation from Florence Dental Clinic.

The crowd was treated to a 3-3 standoff that featured steady action and fine goalkeeper play at both ends.

The draw ultimately turned on a late penalty kick by the Irish after the Vikings had rallied from a 2-1 halftime deficit to a 3-2 lead.

Senior Matthew Hubbard and sophomore Jason Garcia scored in the second half for Siuslaw, which appeared on its way to a 7-0 record with minutes to play.

"Toward the end of the second half, a Waldport player was fouled in the box, resulting in a penalty kick and a tied game," Tomaro said.

It was the second goal on a penalty kick for Waldport.

"The same player took both penalty kicks, and placed them low in the left corner," Tomaro said.

"(Vikings goalkeeper) Kayden (Lane) made admirable attempts for both, diving out toward the post."

Siuslaw's offense peppered the Irish with 14 shots in the first half and 19 in the second.

"The Waldport goalkeeper played an incredible game, making a total of 20 saves," Tomaro said.

Waldport built a 2-1 lead at halftime on a shot that deflected off a Vikings player and on a penalty kick.

Siuslaw had scored first, taking a 1-0 lead on a goal by Jaime Morales Martin-Mora, an exchange student from Spain.

"Jason crossed in front of the goal, Yoskar headed it back across and Jaime touched in past the goalie," Tomaro said.

Hubbard's goal, which tied it a 2-2 in the second half, came on a cross from Jason.

"It was a beautiful play," Tomaro said.

Garcia put the Vikings ahead 3-2 two-thirds of the way through the second half.

The tie was the first for Siuslaw since the school's first-ever match, a 1-1 draw at Sutherlin last season.

Siuslaw is now 6-4-2 all-time, with a match Tuesday at Newport to cap the second season.

Next fall, the Vikings are expected to field both varsity and junior varsity coed teams and compete in the Sky-Em League boys' leagues.

And play more home matches before appreciative family and friends.
