Vikings tie Newport, end season unbeaten

The Siuslaw coed team finished 6-0-2 in its second season of boys junior varsity play. The Vikings were 0-4-1 in their first season last year.
"It is very exciting," Siuslaw coach Londi Tomaro said. "I and the other coaches (Nyra Campbell and Kaleena Jensen) are extremely proud of our players for their persistence, intensity and teamwork."
Good defense has been a hallmark of the 2019 team, which allowed only 11 goals in eight matches, an average of just 1.375 game.
"The Cubs had an incredible passing game and moved the ball around the field real well," Tomaro said. "The Vikings rose to the challenge and throughout the game were breaking up plays, intercepting passes, and making counterattacks.
"It was really fun to see them raise their level of play to be competitive. It feels good to have our team play at an equal level to an obviously skilled and disciplined team."
Siuslaw goalie Kayden Lane had a stellar game with nine saves, four in the first half and five in the second.
"Kayden did a fantastic job," Tomaro said. "I also want to recognize the defense for shutting down attacking play after attacking play by the Cubs in the second half.
"Sonny, Kassandra, Jerrel, Noel, Lucian, Maisie and Alex — each of them made important plays to keep the Newport forwards away from our goal."

Vikings junior Jaxson Jensen scored on a penalty kick in the second half to forge the tie.
