OSAA codifies new sportsmanship rules

Sportsmanship, school enrollment calculations and the expansion of mercy rules to more sports were on the table Monday at the Oregon School Activities Association Delegate Assembly meeting in McMinnville.

The assembly voted unanimously in support of new guidelines for sportsmanship, an action item at the Executive Board meeting in July. The amendment puts the OSAA in compliance with a new state law (HB 3409).

The assembly also received written and oral reports from the Computation of ADM Task Force, which is considering adjustments to how school enrollment is determined for the purposes of placing schools in classifications and districts.

No action was taken, but Siuslaw athletic director Chris Johnson said he was tracking this issue specifically. The Vikings have one of the lowest enrollments in the current Class 4A range.

There also was discussion on expanding mercy rules to other sports, such as basketball. There already are rules for such sports as football, baseball and softball.

The Executive Board next meets Monday, Dec. 9, at the OSAA Office in Wilsonville.

The next Delegate Assembly meeting is Monday, April 6, 2020, at the Shriners Building in Wilsonville, across the street from the OSAA.

There are a number of upcoming meetings scheduled for committees and task forces, including:

  • Sports Medicine Advisory Committee, Nov. 12, Creekside Golf Club, Salem
  • Football Ad Hoc Committee, Nov. 18, OSAA Office, Wilsonville
  • Inclusion Committee, Dec. 12, work session
  • Petition to Play Down Task Force, Dec. 19, work session
  • Rankings Committee, Jan. 16, 2020, OSAA Office, Wilsonville
