Lady Vikings run off with Varsity Silver title


The Siuslaw Vikings were first among the girls and sixth among the boys Saturday in the varsity silver divisions at the Warner Pacific Cross Country Classic at Lents Park in Portland.

Siuslaw senior Hannah Rannow was fourth overall in 19 minutes, 28.8 seconds to pace the Lady Vikings, who beat 20 other teams and featured a field of 159 runners.

The Lady Vikings had 95 points to 127 by runner-up Roseburg and 129 by third-place Cleveland (Portland). South Salem was fourth with 156 and Sheldon (Eugene) fifth with 178.

Siuslaw's scoring runners also finished 25, 26, 27 and 30 overall. Junior Brea Blankenship clocked 20:29.3, sophomore Rylee Colton 20:30.8, junior Gracie Freudenthal a personal-record 20:40.2 and senior Anne Wartnik 20:51.4.

Seniors Chloe Madden and Bryn Clement were 41st and 108th in times of 21:18.9 and 23:17.4.

For team scoring purposes, Rannow was third, Blankenship 21st, Colton 22nd, Freudenthal 23rd and Wartnik 26th for 95 points.

Siuslaw senior Brendon Jensen was 21st overall, 20th in scoring, in a time of 16:58.3 to lead the Vikings boys.

The Vikings scored 232 points for sixth place in a field of 28 schools. South Salem won with 132, followed Columbia River (155), Klamath Union (197), Dallas (214) and St. Helens (223).

Other Vikings scoring included freshman Samuel Ulrich (45th overall, 43rd scoring) in 17:30.2, senior Kiger Johnson (51/48) in 17:36.6, junior Ryan Jennings (61/58) in a season-best 17:45.8 and freshman Kyle Hughes (67/63) in 17:48.2.

Senior Jared Northrop was 70th in a field of 204 in 17:48.8 and sophomore Chad Hughes was 78th in 17:56.1.

Siuslaw's venerable The Run for the Brownies on Thursday at the Florence Golf Links will be the Vikings' final race before district.

The Sky-Em League Championships are Thursday, Oct. 31, and the state championships Saturday, Nov. 9, both at Lane Community College in Eugene.
