Proof that baseball is a year around sport comes Tuesday, with the start of the World Series to end one season and the Vikings taking swings at next.

"We start open cages Tuesday," Siuslaw coach Tom Shinn said. "They will be open on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:00 to 7:45."

Shinn is wearing two caps at the moment, one as an assistant for the Viking football team and the other as head coach of baseball.

Practice doesn't begin until Feb. 17, but Shinn is busy filling out his schedule for this spring as well as hiring an assistant coach.

"The posting for the assistant baseball job just closed," he said. "We haven't set up interviews regarding the position.

"With this week being homecoming activities, I don't believe we will do so before next week."

Baseball and softball recently added Creswell games to their home schedules.

"Our schedule still has three game openings," Shinn said. "I have made contact with a group that runs a spring break tournament, and hope to fill those games with that tournament."
