Thornton closes in on single-season record

Siuslaw sophomore Braydon Thornton

Siuslaw sophomore wide receiver Braydon Thornton is having a career this season, and that's with only three catches in his past two games.

Thornton has moved to No. 2 on the single-season chart for the Vikings with 1,028 yards through seven games.

That puts him 138 yards shy of Jared Kreil, who set the Siuslaw record of 1,166 yards in 2004, and ahead of No. 3 Collin Cram-Watkins, who had 949 yards in 2003.

Thornton gets his shot at No. 1 Friday when the Vikings host the La Pine Hawks in a homecoming game at Hans Petersen Memorial Field. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

Siuslaw is 5-2 overall and tied for second in 3A Special District 2 North with Sutherlin at 2-1. La Pine is 3-4 and 0-3. La Pine won last year's meeting at La Pine, 50-7.

Thornton isn't the only Viking moving up the single-season charts.

Junior quarterback Elijah Blankenship has thrown for 1,693 yards, which is fourth all-time with at least two games to play. He needs 475 more to tie for No. 1. Any state playoff games will just add to the total.

Gabe Haberly has the top two seasons, throwing for 2,168 in 2004 and 2,052 in 2003. Brandon Little (2001) is only three yards ahead of Blankenship at 1,696. Jef McClellan (1977) is now fifth with 1,682 and Jacob Mitchell (2007) sixth with 1,629.

"So with two for-sure games left, and probably more, they will break the records, if they just show up and do their jobs," Siuslaw coach Sam Johnson said.

RANKINGS MYSTERY

Siuslaw was No. 12 in the OSAA 3A rankings Saturday morning, but was No. 14 as of Monday afternoon. Strangely, the Vikings were replaced at No. 12 by Umatilla, which did not play this past weekend. Umatilla was No. 14 Saturday morning. ... Taft remained at No. 13. ...
