Vikings boys, girls earn academic all-state


Both the Siuslaw Vikings boys and girls cross country teams have earned Academic All-State Top 10 honors from the Oregon School Activities Association.

The boys had a grade point average of 3.54 to share sixth place with Molalla and Phoenix.

The Lady Vikings were ninth with a 3.76.

For the boys, Philomath had a 3.87, Newport 3.76, Valley Catholic 3.71, Marist Catholic 3.68 and North Marion 3.63. Sweet Home and La Grande rounded out the top 10 at 3.53 and 3.50, respectively.

The boys 6A No. 1 was Roseburg at 3.95, 5A Churchill at 3.99, 3A Harrisburg at 3.79 and Veritas 2A/1A at 3.86.

For the girls, Phoenix had a 3.96, Newport 3.91, Gladstone, Astoria and Valley Catholic 3.85, Marist Catholic 3.81, Cascade 3.80 and Henley 3.71.

The girls 6A No. 1 was shared by St. Mary's Academy and West Linn at 3.97, 5A Hood River Valley 4.00 and 3A/2A/1A Veritas 3.90.

All OSAA teams that earn a 3.00 GPA or high receive 25 points for the OSAA Cup standings. Those in the top 10 earn addiional points.

The OSAA Cup debuted in 1999 and honors schools for overall excellence in academics, activities and athletics. The Oregonian was the cup sponsor from 2002-17, while Pacific Office Automation is the current cup sponsor.

The OSAA also sponsors an all-classifications sportsmanship award. Siuslaw was the state award winner last school year for wrestling.
