Vikings lasso La Pine for state playoff berth

Siuslaw quarterback Elijah Blankenship passed for two TDs and ran for two more.

The Siuslaw Vikings football team is going to the playoffs.

Friday, the Vikings wrapped up no worse than a third-place finish in 3A District 2 North with a 32-0 victory over La Pine at Hans Petersen Memorial Field.

Siuslaw is 6-2 overall and 3-1 in league, with a game next Friday at Sutherlin to wrap up the regular season.

Sutherlin also is 6-2 and 3-1, so the winner of the Siuslaw-Sutherlin game will get the league's No. 2 seed at state and the loser the No. 3 seed.

Sutherlin matched Siuslaw's record at 6-2 and 3-1 Friday with a 54-21 victory at Pleasant Hill.

League-leader Santiam Christian, 8-0 and 4-0, beat Harrisburg, 43-22.

Pleasant Hill and Harrisburg are each 1-3 in league and La Pine 0-4, and all three have been eliminated from playoff contention.

Friday, Siuslaw junior quarterback Elijah Blankenship threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more.

The Vikings broke open the game with a three-TD explosion over five minutes in the second quarter, Blankenship scoring on runs of 7 and 10 yards and tossing a 28-yard scoring strike to sophomore Camp Lacouture.

Defensively, sophomore Braydon Thornton had three interceptions, including one at the end of the game that was returned 88 yards for a touchdown.

Thornton's return was the third-longest in school history. Colin Cram-Watkins had a 100-yard return in 2003 against Klamath Union and Scott Gordon a 90-yard return in 2015 against Douglas.

SO WHO WILL THE VIKINGS PLAY IN PLAYOFFS?

The question no longer is if the Siuslaw Vikings will make the playoffs.

The question now is who they will play. And when. And where.

The Vikings remained at No. 12 Saturday in the Oregon School Activities Association Class 3A rankings after clinching a playoff berth Friday with a 32-0 victory over La Pine.

League members Santiam Christian and Sutherlin also have clinched playoff berths, with No. 2-ranked Santiam Christian the Special District 2 North's top seed.

Siuslaw travels to Sutherlin this coming Friday, with the winner earning the league's No. 2 seed and the loser assured the No. 3 seed.

If the season ended today, the Vikings would be heading to No. 5 Amity (6-2), a Special District 1 West team located just south of McMinnville.

The 16-team state playoff is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8 and 9, with the top eight-ranked teams hosting games.

Rankings freeze at 10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2.

Current rankings are online at http://www.osaa.org/activities/fbl/rankings
