It's more than a numbers game for Vikings

Siuslaw sophomore Camp Lacouture

If you are thinking of some numbers to ponder, try 52, 275 and 83.

Siuslaw wide receiver Braydon Thornton, a sophomore, needs 52 yards to tie the Vikings football single-season record for reception yards at 1,116.

Thornton, who had 86 yards Friday against La Pine, now has 1,114 yards with at least two games to play.

Siuslaw quarterback Elijah Blankenship, a junior, needs 275 yards to tie the Vikings record for yards in a season at 2,168.

Blankenship, who had 200 yards against La Pine, now has 1,893 yards.

And then there is too-little discussed sophomore running back Camp Lacouture, who is 83 yards short of a 1,000-yard rushing season.

Lacouture could become the 19th Viking to reach 1,000 yards in a season. Sonny Tupua (2008-11) did it three times, finishing with school-record 4,449, and Scott Parker (1989-91) twice, finishing with 2,523.

"The most impressive season stat right now might be getting overlooked," Siuslaw coach Sam Johnson said. "Camp is averaging 7.5 (yards a carry) on the season and has 917 yards rushing on 122 rushes through eight games."

Talking about overlooked, considered the Siuslaw defense, which Friday posted its first shutout in five years.

"I thought our defense was phenomenal (Friday)," Johnson said. "I think we had more interceptions than they had completions.

"(The Vikings defense) stepped up a lot when I put us in really bad field position. But that's a group of young men that you can count on when the going gets tough."

Thornton had seven receptions, but he also had three interceptions, including one for 88 yards and a touchdown.

Sophomore tight end Rhys Fleming had three receptions for 23 yards and a touchdown and two interceptions.

"They've had that gritty mentality all year long," Johnson said of the Vikings defense. "We will really need it these next couple of games."

Siuslaw plays at Sutherlin on Friday with second place in 3A District 2 North on the line.

The Vikings already have clinched a playoff berth, which will give them a 10th game.

"We had a couple pretty significant injuries that we are waiting to hear the severity of this week," Johnson said. "(The injuries) will change our personnel a little bit, but it won't change what we do.

"We have the ‘next man up' mentality, and we will need to make sure to trust that in these next few weeks."

SO WHO WILL THE VIKINGS PLAY IN PLAYOFFS?

The question no longer is if the Siuslaw Vikings will make the playoffs.

The question now is who they will play. And when. And where.

The Vikings remained at No. 12 Saturday in the Oregon School Activities Association Class 3A rankings after clinching a playoff berth Friday with a 32-0 victory over La Pine.

League members Santiam Christian and Sutherlin also have clinched playoff berths, with No. 2-ranked Santiam Christian the Special District 2 North's top seed.

Siuslaw travels to Sutherlin this coming Friday, with the winner earning the league's No. 2 seed and the loser assured the No. 3 seed.

If the season ended today, the Vikings would be heading to No. 5 Amity (6-2), a Special District 1 West team located just south of McMinnville.

The 16-team state playoff is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8 and 9, with the top eight-ranked teams hosting games.

Rankings freeze at 10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2.

Current rankings are online at http://www.osaa.org/activities/fbl/rankings
