The Siuslaw Vikings boys cross country team is the Sky-Em League champion for 2019.

The Vikings beat Marist Catholic by one point Thursday, just minutes after the Lady Vikings won a team title by one point on the Lane Community College course in Eugene.

The Siuslaw boys scored 37 points, while Marist Catholic had 38, Marshfield 86, Junction City 98 and Cottage Grove 100.

"We ran about as well as we possibly could on both sides," Siuslaw coach Chris Johnson said. "Huge performances by Rylee (Colton) and Gracie (Freudenthal) for the girls.

"They are both so talented and now the confidence is coming which produces the kind of performances we saw today.

"For the boys, the two freshman (Samuel Ulrich and Kyle Hughes) really broke through. It's really fun to add that youth to our trio of seniors.

"We anticipated that it would be close on both sides, but never dreamed of a 1 point difference.

"Our kids came to run."

Siuslaw senior Brendon Jensen and freshman Samuel Ulrich placed 4-5 to lead the charge, with senior Kiger Johnson eighth, freshman Kyle Hughes ninth and junior Jaxson Jensen 11th.

Brendon Jensen finished in 16 minutes, 34.7 seconds, Ulrich in a personal-record 16:35.9, Johnson in a PR 16:53.4, Hughes in a PR 17:02.3 and Jaxson Jensen in a PR 17:16.1.

Senior Jared Northrop was 17th in 17:40.8 and junior Ryan Jennings 23rd in 18:17.3.

Marist Catholic senior Wiley Watts ran a PR 16:11.6 to win the individual title.

Cottage Grove freshman Jaden Owens was second in a PR 16:33.5 and Marshfield senior Aaron Prince third in 16:34.2.

Siuslaw and Marist Catholic, along with Owens and Prince, will return to the same course on Saturday, Nov. 9, to compete in the Oregon School Activities Association Class 4A championships.
