Did Vikings get a taste of what's to come?

First-year coach Sam Johnson offered up some winning football, and Vikings fans ate it up.

Sam Johnson will have a lot to talk about Monday when he holds his first football banquet at Siuslaw High School.

There will be a successful season to relish, season records to savor and amazing memories to delight in.

Frivolity kicks off at 6:30 p.m.

"We will talk about each of our players," promises Johnson, the Vikings' first-year coach. "As for our awards, we don't really do that a whole bunch."

A 6 win, 4-loss turnaround season has been reward enough for Vikings Nation, starved for a competitive season since Tim Dodson retired as Siuslaw coach following the 2015 season.

Johnson, a former all-star player as a Viking, delivered, thanks to a roster full of players also hungry for success.

Along the way, Siuslaw's skill positions put up some impressive numbers that also helped erase the memory of a winless season and relegation to Class 3A a year earlier.

Quarterback Elijah Blankenship passed for a single-season school-record 2,195 yards, connecting for 17 touchdowns. The junior also ran for 815 yards and seven TDs.

Blankenship now owns the top three passing games in Vikings history with 339 against Harrisburg, 337 against Newport and 318 against Philomath.

Sophomore wide receiver Braydon Thornton had a single-season school-record 1,279 yards, with 14 touchdown receptions, despite missing the team's final game of the season.

Thornton also had a Siuslaw single-game record of 307 yards receiving against Harrisburg, pulling in four passes for TDs.

"If one player were to make me lose all my hair, it would be Braydon Thornton by far," Johnson said lightheartedly. "A very special football player and young man, but he knows how to stress me out and keep me on my toes 24/7."

(Note: In setting the record, Thornton pushed his coach down to No. 10 all-time in single-season receiving yards. Johnson had 692 in 2013.)

Still, Thornton isn't that player that makes Johnson start reaching for some aspirin.

"Heart attack would be Brady Libby, when he will check our defense, because he knows what play they're in," Johnson said of his all-league junior safety.

"I get so nervous, and then it worked out every time because he watched so much film."

The Vikings also offered a strong ground game in 2019, with sophomore Camp Lacouture rushing for 917 yards, Blankenship for 815 and junior Hector Garcia for 734.

There may be more records for the Siuslaw math teacher to uncover.

"I need to check the gold book for more records involving the team," Johnson, said, "because I think we broke one or two. I will keep you posted."

Yes, 2019 just may be a taste of what's to come.
