December 4, 2018, isn't a day that likely will live in infamy, but it may be a date that burns in the competitive souls of all eight Siuslaw Vikings girls basketball players.

On that day, the Newport Cubs beat the visiting Lady Vikings by 40 points, 67-27. It was the second-worst loss of 19 losses Siuslaw endured last season.

Wednesday, exactly a year later, the Lady Vikings will host the No. 9-ranked Cubs at Glenn Butler Court.

Tip-off for the game and the season is 5:45 p.m., with Coast Radio on the air with a pregame show at 5:30 p.m.

"We had a really good turnout of girls," first-year coach Ashlee Cole said the first week of practice. "The girls are very excited and hyped up for practice.

"I hope we can keep that enthusiasm throughout the whole season."

Siuslaw lists eight players on varsity and another 16 on junior varsity.

Seniors include Brooklyn Cahoon, Mia Collins, Kelsey Larson and Savannah Morris.

Juniors include Brea Blankenship, Gracie Freudenthal and Lizbeth Garcia-Galvan.

Lindsey Long, a junior who will be graduating a year early, is listed on the roster as a senior.

Newport returns five players from last year's team, which lost in the state semifinals to Marist Catholic, 46-45.

The Lady Cubs were 19-9 overall and 8-4 in the Oregon West Conference. They entered the state playoffs as the No. 12 seed.

Siuslaw was 5-19 overall last season, 1-9 in the Sky-Em League.

The Lady Vikings follow Wednesday's opener with a game Friday at Pleasant Hill.

In other games Wednesday involving Sky-Em League teams, Junction City is at North Valley and Marshfield hosts South Umpqua.

Friday, No. 2-ranked Marist Catholic hosts Gladstone, Elmira entertains Newport, Cottage Grove plays at North Bend and Marshfield hosts North Marion.
