Vikings' Mason Buss has drive for a title


Freshman Mason Buss won the 120-pound title Friday to lead the Siuslaw Vikings wrestling team to a third-place finish in the 17-school Deven Dawson Memorial Tournament at Harrisburg.

The Vikings scored 129 points, finishing behind Pleasant Hill (158) and Oakland (146) and ahead of Central Linn (126). Host Harrisburg was fifth with 100.

Buss scored pins in the quarterfinals and semifinals before defeating Blake Owens of Central Linn in the finals, 6-5.

Juniors Elijah LaCosse (at 145) and Christian Newlan (195) had second-place finishes for the Vikings, with sophomore Hayden Muller picking up a fourth place at 138.

Junior Ryan Jennings (160) and freshman Hunter Patterson (126) had fifth-place finishes and sophomore JC Gentry (220) a sixth.

Buss and LaCosse scored 24 points each for Siuslaw, Newlan 22, Jennings 16, Muller 15 and Patterson 11.

Gentry and freshman Ian Sissel (160) scored 7 each and junior Jesus Garcia 3 at 170.

The tournament was the season-opener for Siuslaw, which competes next Friday and Saturday at the Coast Classic in North Bend.
