Vikings earn some vintage Wartnik praise

Siuslaw wrestling coach Neil Wartnik is in midseason form when it comes to praising his athletes.

The season is just one tournament old, yet the veteran Vikings coach was at the top of his laudatory game Monday following Friday's Deven Dawson Memorial Tournament in Harrisburg.

"Mason Buss was outstanding," Wartnik said. "He defeated a pair of formidable wrestlers from Central Linn en route to his championship — I mean outstanding wrestlers."

Buss was the lone Viking weight champion, with the promising freshman winning the 120-pound class.

His victory vaulted the Vikings to third place in the 17-school event.

Or was it second place? We may never know, because the Harrisburg scorekeeper failed to record a second Siuslaw champion, freshman Yoskar Delamora, who pinned his only two opponents in the 106-pound weight class.

"The man doing the scoring at the tournament is not trained in the Trackwrestling.com system," Wartnik said. "I don't know if he made any other mistakes.

"But if Yoskar's victory was scored properly, and there were no other mistakes, we would have placed second as a team."

Pleasant Hill was first with 158 points, followed by Oakland with 146 and Siuslaw with 129. Central Linn had 126 and host Harrisburg 100.

Scio had 97, Vernonia 92, Toledo 85, Jefferson 84, Creswell 78, Coquille 65, Santiam 61, Sheridan 47, Kennedy 36, Amity 35, Santiam Christian 27 and Waldport 23.

The Vikings will compete this coming weekend in the 30-school Coast Classic at North Bend.

The report card from Wartnik:

Mason Buss … fought off his back in the semi-finals before pinning his opponent,
and he overcame a one point deficit by scoring a takedown as time
expired to eke out a 1 point victory in the finals.  Both matches were
intense.  In both Mason exhibited great composure, skill and mental
toughness.

Elijah LaCosse … had a standout performance.  He lost 5-3 in the
finals to a 2018 3A state champion.  The match was outstanding.  Elijah
never stopped moving, never gave up.  His performance was particularly
impressive considering that Elijah had been pinned by the same person a
week prior at an all-comers meet on the OSU campus.

Christian Newlan .. was outstanding as well.   He had a pair of impressive
wins to make the finals and wrestled with great energy in the finals.
He made numerous bad choices in the finals match.  Otherwise it would
have been much closer.  With a few adjustments, Christian could beat the
boy he lost to.

Yoskar Delamora .. pinned two opponents en route to a championship in the
106 pound weight bracket.  He pinned both boys in the first round.

Hayden Muller … was amazing!  She beat a pair of boys to make it to the
semis — pinned them both. In the semis she fought to the end. She
scored the last two points of the match. She just didn't have enough
technique to pull off this match.  Still, she showed that she can wrestle
with the boys — and win. The injury defaulted her last match because she
tweaked a knee early in the day. The coaching staff decided not to risk
anything worse.  She should be back for this weekend.

Hunter Petterson … showed improvement over the course of the day.  He did
a good job of listening.

Ryan Jennings … wrestled many strong matches throughout the day.

JC Gentry … wrestled very well.  It looked like he was going to win in the
5th-6th match, but he overran a pinning combination and ended up on his
back.  Bummer.

Bailey Overton … wrestled tough.  She had the misfortune of being in
Mason's bracket--which was small--and her only matches were against the
two tough Central Linn wrestlers who battled Mason.

Jason Garcia … wrestled great and got his first varsity win.  In that
match he took his opponent down 8 times in a row.  Very impressive.
