Vikings' Buss, Muller, Sissel capture titles

Siuslaw sophomore Hayden Muller

Siuslaw wrestlers Mason Buss, Hayden Muller and Ian Sissel all won titles Saturday at the Grants Pass Winter Kickoff.

Here is commentary from Vikings coach Neil Wartnik:

This weekend the team had an outstanding outing on every level.  It was
an outstanding team bonding time, the team members represented our
school with dignity and honor, and many of our students wrestled very
well.  The varsity boys placed 8th out of 34 teams, the varsity girls
placed 9th out of 24 teams, and the JV boys placed 12th out of 30 teams.

Top honors would go to Mason Buss and Hayden Muller who won Varsity
championships.  This is the first time a Viking has won a championship
at Grants Pass.  Mason came out on top of a 120 pound bracket that
included competitors who had defeated him at previous competitions.  He
wrestled with great poise and courage pinning his opponents in the
semi-finals and finals.  It was fun watching him take charge.

Hayden won the girls 135 pound weight bracket, defeating Natanee
Campbell from Mazama in the finals.  Natanee defeated Hayden at the
Regional tournament last year, so this was a special accomplishment.
Hayden fought off her back in the first round, narrowly escaping an
early pin.  In the second round it was Hayden's turn to put Natanee on
her back, and Natanee would not be able to avoid the pin.

Yoskar Delamora and Arrianna Brown also had outstanding performances,
placing 3rd in their varsity weight-classes.  Yoskar defeated three
Californians after a hard-fought loss in the semi-finals on his way to
the consolation championship.  Arriana recorded her first varsity wins
at this tournament and wrestled with great composure and tenacity,
pinning her last two opponents.

Elijah LaCosse wrestled extremely well, placing fourth.  His bracket was
loaded with exceptional wrestlers!  He had a 4-2 record.  In his
consolation finals match he nearly avenged a loss the previous week to
Matthew Bolanos of Crater.  The final score was 10-8, but there were a
number of questionable refereeing judgments in the match.  Regardless,
it was a major improvement over his performance at the Coast Classic.

Ryan Jennings also wrestled well.  Though he did not place, he was 4-2
in the tournament.  He continues to improve.

Another promising occurrence was the return of Matthew Horrillo who
wrestled in the 285 bracket.  He had been out with knee and ankle
injuries the previous two tournaments.

In JV action Ian Sissel paced the team with a championship in the 160
pound weight class.  He pinned his way through the tournament, 5 pins!
He is off to an exceptional start, having won two 30 team JV tournaments
this year.

Other placers included Cayden Gray at 113 pounds and JC Gentry at 195.
Both placed fourth in their weight classes.
