Vikings Newlan, Horrillo top seeds at district


Siuslaw junior Christian Newlan is seeded No. 1 at 220 pounds at district

Siuslaw Vikings wrestlers Christian Newlan and Matthew Horrillo are the top seeds in their weight classes as the two-day OSAA Class 4A Special District 2 boys championships get underway Friday at Stayton High School.

Newlan is No. 1 at 220 pounds, Horrillo at 285. Four other Vikings are seeded, Hunter Pettersen No. 3 at 126, Elijah LaCosse No. 3 at 138, Ryan Jennings No. 4 at 152 and Yoskar Delamora No. 5 at 106.

Siuslaw has a total of 19 athletes entered in 13 of the 14 weight classes, including two each at 126, 132, 138, 145, 152 and 220.

Through Friday's rounds, the Vikings had seven wrestlers in the championship semifinals, eight alive in consolation with one loss each and four eliminated from competition with two losses each.

Special District 2 is one of four districts that will send the top four placers in each weight class to state.

The Oregon School Activities Association state championships are Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28-29, at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.
