Vikings' Horrillo, Newlan win district titles


Siuslaw junior Christian Newlan and senior Matthew Horrillo are heading to the state wrestling championships as 4A Special District 2 champions.

Four Vikings boys and two girls also have qualified for the Oregon School Activities Association Class 4A Championships this coming Friday and Saturday in Portland.

In district finals Saturday at Stayton, Newlan beat Jake Fanning of Sweet Home, 3-2, in the final at 220 pounds and Horrillo won by decision over Joseph Choi of Philomath/Alsea, 3-0, at 285.

Freshman Mason Buss (120) and junior Elijah LaCosse (138) each placed second, while junior Ryan Jennings (152) and senior Luis Infante-Marquez (182) each placed third to advance to state.

Lady Vikings sophomores Hayden Muller and Bailey Overton qualified for the girls state championships in last weekend's regional tournament in Springfield.

Siuslaw scored 163.5 points to finish fourth in the eight-school field. Sweet Home, ranked No. 2 in the state in the OSAAtoday coaches' poll, was first with 477.5.

Cascade, ranked No. 5, was second with 214 and host Stayton third with 167. No. 8 Philomath was fifth with 151.5.

Also placing Saturday for the Vikings were Yoskar Delamora, fifth at 106; Hunter Petterson, fifth at 126; Jaime Morales Martin-Mora, sixth at 132, and Louis Gentry, sixth at 152.
