When Sam Johnson took over the Siuslaw football team, he wanted his Vikings to have fun and be like a family.

Johnson seems to be taking that literally, recently adding a fourth member of his family to the Vikings coaching staff.

Lane Johnson, 56, who coached Sheldon to a state title, is the newest member of the Siuslaw staff.

"We are adding a five-time state champion football coach to our staff," Sam Johnson said of his uncle. "He won a state title in the mid '90s coaching at Glencoe as the defensive coordinator, then won three as the defensive coordinator at Sheldon and one as the head coach."

The Irish were 67-10 in Johnson's six years as head coach, which ended after the 2016 season. He was part of four state championships during his 20 years on the Sheldon staff.

Sam Johnson's father, Andy, and cousin, Nick, were members of his first-year staff, which led the Vikings to their first state playoff appearance since Tim Dodson's last season in 2015.

"My goal as a head coach is to make sure our kids have great men of character coaching them to be successful in much more than just football," Sam Johnson said. "When you look at our staff, that's exactly what they are, incredible men of character, who just happen to know football really well."

Other members of the Vikings staff include Gerald Fleming, Tom Shinn, Bob Teter, Dennis Davidson, Jeff Gray and Billy Jones.

First practice for the Vikings is Monday, Aug. 17.

Sam Johnson plans to have the Vikings compete in the Marshfield Jamboree on Friday, Aug. 28.

Siuslaw opens its season Friday, Sept. 4, at South Umpqua, then returns for three home games in a row.
