OSAA Class 4A schools to expand playoffs

Playoffs are expanding for Class 4A next school year, Siuslaw athletic director Chris Johnson announced Tuesday.

Seven tournaments will add four teams each, from a 20-school format this school year to a 24-school format for 2020-21.

Sports impacted include volleyball and boys and girls soccer in the fall, boys and girls basketball in the winter and baseball and softball in the spring.

There are 34 schools in six districts (leagues) of Class 4A of the Oregon School Activities Association.

The 24-team model calls for all teams finishing first, second or third in their leagues to automatically qualify, for a total of 18.

The fourth-place team in all but the four-school Greater Oregon League also qualifies, for a total of five.

The 24th and final sport will be given to the highest-ranked team based off RPI that has not already qualified.

The six league champions plus the two highest-ranked second-place teams will receive a bye in the bracket.

The remaining 16 teams will have play-in games for the final eight spots.

Class 4A includes the five-school Cowapa League, the six-school Tri-Valley Conference, the seven-school Oregon West Conference, the six-school Sky-Em League, the six-school Skyline Conference and the four-school Greater Oregon League.

Siuslaw, which competes in the Sky-Em League, will field its first varsity boys soccer team this fall, featuring a coed roster. A Lady Vikings varsity soccer team is planned for the near future.

Both volleyball and boys basketball qualified for the playoffs this school year, volleyball as the No. 18-ranked team and boys basketball as No. 20.

Girls basketball finished No. 33 and failed to qualify.

There were no Siuslaw boys and and girls varsity soccer teams, while the baseball and softball seasons were canceled before they ever began.
