Siuslaw Vikings softball coach Sean O'Mara needs someone to pitch in, soon.

Pitchers and catchers start official workouts Monday, and there is something missing.

"There is no pitcher in the program who has pitched in any varsity game," O'Mara said. "We will be exploring all options moving forward."

Softball was one of the spring sports canceled last spring due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

O'Mara would have had no problem finding a pitcher last spring, which would have been the senior season for Nina-Grace Aaron.

Aaron was an all-league pitcher her sophomore and junior seasons, on the mound for virtually every pitch.

Pitchers and catchers will begin workouts at 1 p.m. Monday, which is the start of spring break. They will need to have signed up through FamilyID and have been cleared to play by the high school.

"We have a two-week early start window for those particular positions to get their arms ready for games," O'Mara said.

At the same time he's getting pitchers and catchers ready for the April 13 opener at Cottage Grove, the Vikings coach will continue to recruit players for the team.

"It is unclear at this point exactly which athletes are going to participate in softball, and which ones are going to opt out for the Covid season," O'Mara said.

Registration also has begun for baseball, which has an online player meeting scheduled for noon, Thursday, March 18.

Tom Shinn returns as Vikings baseball coach. He currently is an assistant coach for football, while O'Mara is helping with the volleyball program.

Both baseball and softball will play identical 15-game, all-Sky-Em League schedules.
