The Siuslaw Vikings soccer team continues to experiment as it takes its first jab at the varsity level.

Thursday, 4A power Marist Catholic made short work of the young Vikings, 8-0, in a Sky-Em League match in Eugene.

Siuslaw, 1-5, hosts Marshfield at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Vikings' final regular-season home match.

"We moved people around quite a bit," Vikings coach Londi Tomaro said, "figuring out where different players had the most impact and what combinations of players were effectively moving the ball up the field."

Marist Catholic made the Vikings pay for the experimenting as the Spartans improved to 5-0, outscoring opponents 28-2 in the process.

The Spartans scored all their goals in the first half and the game was called at halftime due to the mercy rule.

"Unfortunately, two of the goals were scored by our defense attempting to clear the ball," Tomaro said. "Kayden (Lane) played well in goal.

"Marist got through on breakaways into the box a few times and had some beautiful shots from quarter field."

She found the match useful, if brief.

"I definitely saw things to like that we will work to capitalize on and expand on in future games," Tomaro said. "And we have things to work on to emphasize movement, create and take advantage of space, and visualize the passing lanes."

With only one senior on the team, she finds much to like in her three-year-old program, the first two seasons played at the junior varsity level.

"Our team has a lot of talent, which is a great base to build from," Tomaro said. "We need to work up to the point where the players are consistently and cohesively working together."
