Siuslaw senior Christian Newlan will compete in the 4A state track and field meet after all.

Newlan has been granted a wild-card into the discus after his third-place finish Saturday at the Sky-Em League championships at Hans Petersen Field.

Newlan threw the discus a personal-record 125 feet, 1 inch at the meet. Teammate Skyler Loomis was second at 127-11 and Elmira's Cobyn Herbert first at 142-8.

Pole vaulters Camp Lacouture and Kyle Hughes, fourth and fifth at district at 12-6, also were given wild-card berths.

Lacouture, a junior, already had qualified for state in the 300 hurdles and the 4x`100 relay.

Hughes, a sophomore, already had qualified after finishing second behind his brother, Chad, a junior, in the 3,000 meters.

The addition of Newlan gives the Vikings boys 11 athletes at state.

The Lady Vikings have five athletes heading to state.

The 4A state meet is this coming Friday and Saturday at Hans Petersen Field in Florence.

Two Vikings received special awards at Saturday's post-meet ceremony. Senior Skyler Loomis was named the top boys thrower and sophomore Samuel Ulrich the bop boys runner …

Loomis won the javelin on his final throw of the meet and finished second in the shot put. …

Ulrich won the boys 800 meters, the 1,500 and ran a leg of the Vikings' state-qualifying 4x400 relay team. …

Other individual awards went to Marshfield freshman Jonathon Parks (top boys jumper), Junction City senior Anika Thompson (top girls runner), Marshfield senior Mira Matthews (top girls thrower) and Cottage Grove senior Matelynn Ladd (top girls jumper). …

Siuslaw's Chris Johnson and Marshfield's Chad Scriven were coaches of the year for boys and girls, respectively. …
