Jake Thompson wins in his Double-A debut

Jake Thompson, former Siuslaw baseball all-star and All-American pitcher at Oregon State.

Siuslaw graduate Jake Thompson is now working in Portland, where he was a winner on his first day on the job.

Thompson pitched one inning of relief for the Portland (Maine) Sea Dogs to pick up the victory Saturday on his first day outing with the Boston Red Sox's AA affiliate.

The Sea Dogs were down 6-3 to the host New Hampshire Fisher Cats in the bottom of the eighth when Thompson was called in to pitch.

Thompson retired all three batters he faced, striking out the final batter.

The Sea Dogs rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth for a 7-6 lead, and Thompson was credited with the win when the Fisher Cats failed to answer in the bottom of the ninth.

It was the sixth victory in Thompson's minor-league career and his first since 2018, when he won five for Boston's Class A team in Salem, Mass.

Thompson is working his way back from Tommy John surgery. He opened the season with three appearances for the Greenville (S.C.) Drive, the High-A affiliate of the Red Sox.
