Field records shattered at 4A state meet

Class 4A athletes put on quite a show during the two-day meet at Hans Petersen Field, collecting prizes, glory and records.

Siuslaw's second-place showing in the 4A state track and field championships put an exclamation point on the careers of Lady Vikings seniors Brea Blankenship, Gracie Freudenthal and Andrea Osbon.

The talented trio combined to contribute 48 of Siuslaw's 50 points in the two-day festival of athletes at Hans Petersen Field.

Osbon had 16 points, Freudenthal 14 and Blankenship 12 in their individual disciplines for 42 points, while Blankenship and Freudenthal ran legs of the fourth-place 4x400 relay team that contributed 6.

Junior Rylee Colton earned 2 points in the 3,000 meters and joined promising freshman Corduroy Holbrook in running the other two legs of the 4x400.

Blankenship punctuated her career with a state title in the 800 meters on Saturday, while earlier in the day earning 2 points for seventh place in the 1,500.

Freudenthal, who won the 300 hurdles title as a sophomore, finished second in the 100 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles Saturday.

Osbon scored in all three throws over two days, finishing second in the shot put, fourth in the discus and sixth in the javelin.

All three are etched in the Vikings record book.

Osbon is in the top 10 in each of her three throws, No. 5 all-time in the shot put, No. 6 in the discus and No. 9 in the javelin with personal records she set this season.

Freudenthal is the school's all-time leader in the girls 300 hurdles, No. 2 in the 100 hurdles, No. 10 in the 200, tied for No. 12 in the 400 and No. 15 in the 800.

Blankenship is No. 2 all-time in the mile, No. 6 in the 800 and No. 16 in the 1,500.

BRIGHT FUTURE FOR VIKINGS BOYS

The Siuslaw boys featured much more depth than the girls team, and that may pay off handsomely next season.

Returning state qualifiers include sophomores Hunter Petterson (100, 4x100, 4x400), Samuel Ulrich (800, 1,500, 4x400) and Kyle Hughes (3,000, pole vault) and juniors Chad Hughes (1,500, 3,000), Camp Lacouture (300 hurdles, pole vault, 4x100), James Smith (4x400 relay) and Avery Hart (shot put).

Ulrich, a sophomore, scored 13 of the Vikings' 37.5 team points with a second in the 800 and a fourth in the 1,500.

Kyle Hughes earned 4 by placing fifth in the pole vault, Lacouture had 3.5 points (eighth in 300 hurdles for 1, tied for sixth in the pole vault for 2.5), Pettersen 3 for a sixth in the 100, Chad Hughes 2 for seventh in the 3,000.

Senior Skyler Loomis had 4 points for fifth in the javelin, while both relay teams scored, the 4x400 getting 5 for a fourth-place finish and the 4x100 3 for a sixth place.

The Vikings boys also have left marks in the school record book.

Loomis is No. 9 in the javelin and No. 18 in the discus, Lacouture No. 10 in the pole vault and No. 20 in both the 300 hurdles and javelin, Ulrich No. 10 in the 800 and No. 16 in the 1,500 and Kyle Hughes No. 10 in the pole vault.

Chad Hughes is No. 15 in the 3,000 and No. 20 in the 1,500, Rhys Fleming No. 15 in the javelin, Pettersen No. 17 in both the 100 and 200 and Hart No. 19 in the shot put.

Seniors Elijah Blankenship and Christian Newlan are also in the Vikings record book, with Newlan No. 20 in the discus.

Blankenship, borrowed from the Vikings baseball team at the last minute, posted the 11th-fastest 200 in school history and is No. 18 in the 100. He anchored both Vikings relay teams at state.

HANS PETERSEN BATTERED, BRUISED

The presence of a state tournament at Hans Petersen Field put virtually all field records in jeopardy, and the athletes delivered.

The girls set field records in 11 of 17 events, the boys 4 of 17.

Hidden Valley seniors Jada Hurley (100, 200) and Kaiah Fisher (shot put, discus) and Junction City senior Anika Thompson (1,500, 3,000) had two each.

There also were field records for girls in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, high jump, long jump and triple jump.

For the boys, Astoria junior Colton McMaster had field records in winning the shot put and discus, while field records also were set in the 400 and long jump.

ONE STATE RECORD, MAYBE TWO

The Stanford-bound Fisher set the 4A state record in winning the discus, while the Oregon-bound Thompson may have set a record in the 3,000.

The Eugene Register-Guard reported Thompson set the record, but that does not agree with the state records book maintained by Vikings coach Chris Johnson.

Either way, her field record time of 9 minutes, 46,89 seconds was pretty dang fast, in fact the best time in the state at any classification this season.
