Vikings to host first home match tonight

Siuslaw wrestling coach Neil Wartnik

The Siuslaw Vikings wrestling team gets its first home-match advantage tonight when it hosts the Siuslaw Duals at 5 p.m. at Glenn Butler Court.

"The attitude is so positive," Siuslaw coach Neil Wartnik said Tuesday, two events into the season. "Everybody gave us their best. Kudos to the team."

Saturday, the Vikings went 5-0 at the Marshfield Invitational, beating Central Linn, Douglas, Willamette, Coquille and Marshfield.

"John Corser and JC Gentry had breakout performances in the duals," Wartnik said. "Standouts Elijah LaCosse, Ryan Jennings and Mason Buss looked great."

The Vikings opened their season Friday at the Sutherlin Invitational.

"The kids wrestled great, too," Wartnik said.

Today begins a busy week for the Vikings, who wrestle Wednesday at Sweet Home and Saturday at North Bend.

"We have a few minor injuries," Wartnik said. "This will be a challenging week. Cascade, whom we wrestle tonight, and Sweet Home, North Marion and Junction City have great teams.

"We will get great matches."

Siuslaw has two more home matches scheduled after tonight, Tuesday, June 8, hosting Marshfield, Stayton and Sutherlin, and Tuesday, June 15, a dual meet with North Bend.
