Siuslaw seniors LaCosse, Newlan in semis


Siuslaw seniors Elijah LaCosse and Christian Newlan have advanced to the championship semifinals of the Oregon Wrestling Association's 4A State Championships in Turner.

LaCosse, the No 5 seed at 145, pinned Marcos Grijalva of Ontario in 3 minutes, 17 seconds, in the first round and won by decision over No. 3 seed Parker McKibbon of Tillamook, 11-7, in the quarterfinals.

LaCosse advanced opposite No. 2 seed Savien Burk of Mazama.

Newlan, the No. 6 seed at 220, won by decision over Nicholas Igrah of Ontario, 4-0, and pinned No. 3 seed Joseph Baynard of Phoenix in the quarterfinals in 5:40.

Newlan will face No. 2 seed Lawson Talamantez of Seaside in the championship semifinals.

Siuslaw has eight wrestlers who qualified for the two-day event at Cascade High School.

Also competing are sophomore Oskar De la Mora, unseeded at 120; sophomore Hunter Petterson, the No. 6 seed at 132; senior Ryan Jennings, unseeded at 160; sophomore Mason Buss, unseeded at 170; freshman Dayne Muller, unseeded at 182, and junior JC Gentry, unseeded at 220.

Seven of the eight Vikings will be wrestling Saturday, two in the championship bracket, five in consolation.

Siuslaw currently is in 10th place in the team standings with 42 points.
