Senior-dominated Vikings prepare to rock

Les Schwab Bowl wide receiver Braydon Thornton leads a stellar Vikings senior class.

The Siuslaw Vikings football team — which has posted openings for two assistant coaches — may need more help off the field than on this coming season.

Siuslaw is down three assistant coaches from last season. The Vikings open fall practice two weeks from this coming Monday, with a jamboree tentatively scheduled for Friday, Aug. 27.

The talented and senior-dominated Vikings host South Umpqua in the season opener Friday, Sept. 3, at Hans Petersen Field. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, Siuslaw has posted job openings for two assistants to replace Lane Johnson, Tom Shinn and Bob Teter.

Sam Johnson returns for his third season as head coach, with current assistants Andy Johnson, Billy Jones, Gerald Fleming, Jeff Gray and Nick Johnson.

Santiam Christian won the 3A District 2 North last year at 4-0, finishing 5-1 overall, including a runner-up in the state championship game. Cascade Christian won that showdown, 13-10.

Junction City was 5-1 overall and 4-1 in league, La Pine 4-2 and 2-2, Pleasant Hill 2-3 and 2-2, Siuslaw 3-3 and 2-3, Sisters 2-4 and 1-3 and Harrisburg 0-6 and 0-4.

Harrisburg, which has hired a new coach, is playing a full nonleague schedule this coming season against mostly 2A schools.

Siuslaw still is searching for home opponent for Oct. 1, an open date once Harrisburg canceled in favor of a less-demanding schedule.

Five of the Vikings' scheduled games are on the road, so the school has a strong preference for a nonleague home game, if possible.

One oddity in the league schedule is 4A schools Junction City and Sisters playing twice, a league game Oct. 1 at Sisters and a nonleague game Oct. 15 at Junction City.
