Siuslaw cancels home opener due to covid

The Siuslaw Vikings football team's season opener has been canceled, athletic director Chris Johnson announced Tuesday night.

"Due to complications related to Covid-19, we will have to cancel our opening week home game vs. South Umpqua," Johnson said in an email release to the media.

"We also have canceled the JV game at South Umpqua."

The Vikings were scheduled to open their season Friday, Sept. 3, against South Umpqua at Hans Petersen Memorial Stadium.

The Vikings are now down to a seven-game schedule for fall 2021, with only two at home — Friday, Oct. 8, against La Pine and Thursday, Oct. 14, against Pleasant Hill.

Siuslaw also has an open date Oct. 1, a date that oddly now may be easier to fill.

"With the current (covid) case rate, as sad as this sounds, it's likely there will be cancellations from teams that will need a game on Oct. 1 and would travel," Johnson said.

"We will fill it if we can find someone who has an opening that is willing to come to us. We've been active all summer seeking an opponent."

Two Vikings players tested positive to covid this past weekend, and football activities were suspended, resulting in the cancelation.
