Vikings not only team to cancel opener

The first Friday night of football for the Siuslaw Vikings and their opponents this season was something of a bust.

Games for Siuslaw, Sisters, Cascade Christian, La Pine and Pleasant Hill were canceled.

Junction City rolled visiting North Eugene, 39-13, while Gladstone's opener at Banks has yet to be reported to the OSAA.

Santiam Christian played Thursday night, holding off visiting Amity, 20-16.

The Vikings still are seeking an opponent for this coming Friday night, Siuslaw athletic director Chris Johnson said. Scheduled opponent Brookings-Harbor canceled its season.

For now, the Vikings are scheduled to kick off their season Friday, Sept. 17, at Sisters.

In other games of possible interest, 3A South Umpqua, which was to open against Siuslaw, beat 5A Springfield, 39-7; Mapleton forfeited its home opener to Jewell;  4A No. 1 Marshfield beat visiting Mazama, 35-20, and Reedsport lost Thursday at Monroe, 26-8.
