Vikings will open Friday at home after all

The Siuslaw Vikings will be playing football this Friday after all.

And it will be at home.

"We lucked out," Siuslaw athletic director Chris Johnson said Monday. "We are hosting North Valley on Friday night at 7 p.m. for varsity football.

"All hands on deck."

North Valley was to have played Marshfield on Thursday, but Johnson somehow worked his magic.

"Marshfield did us a solid," Johnson said. "They are going to play Churchill so we can play North Valley.

"Better match-up for all parties."

Tickets for Friday's game should be available sometime Monday through Hometown Ticketing, Johnson said.

North Valley, a 4A Grants Pass school, opened its season last Friday with a 21-20 victory over 3A St. Mary's of Medford in a game played at Sutherlin.

The Vikings had to cancel their Sept. 3 opener against South Umpqua due to a positive covid test.

South Umpqua filled the date in fine fashion, rolling to a 39-7 victory at 5A Springfield.

Siuslaw also had an open date this coming Friday after scheduled opponent Brookings-Harbor canceled its season.

The addition of North Valley gives the Vikings a balanced schedule of four home games and four road games.
