Lady Vikings fall in five at Pleasant Hill

The Siuslaw Vikings volleyball team dropped a tough five-set match for the second time in a row Wednesday.

And for the second time in the row it was after assuming a 2-0 sets led.

Pleasant Hill rallied to beat the visiting Lady Vikings, 23-25, 22-25, 25-17, 25-22, 16-14.

Siuslaw, 1-2, next plays at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in an endowment game at North Bend. The NFHS Network will carry the game live.

"It was a hard-fought match for both teams and it was a fun game to watch," Siuslaw first-year coach Kari Blake said.

"I thought the Siuslaw girls ran the floor well, and we came away from the match knowing what we need to work on for our future games."

Junior middle blocker Desi Tupua, the Coast Radio player of the week, had another standout match with 15 kills and 6 aces.

"She knows the game so well, and it shows in her play," Blake said of Tupua. "Desi had a really amazing night."

The Lady Vikings' twin out-side towers, 6-foot freshmen Mylee Blake and Rihanna Lane, had strong nights. Blake had 7 kills and 4 blocks and Lane had 6 kills and 4 blocks.

Sophomore Meika Shappell had a solid match in the back row and senior setter/right-side hitter Zoe Alberty was a leader on the court the entire match, coach Blake said.

"Pleasant Hill was a scrappy team, and they were able to find the weak spots in our defense and used that to come out on top," Blake said.

The Siuslaw junior varsity lost in three sets.

"Sydney Barnett, Bailey Myrick and Bri Pavesich had really great play at the net," Blake said. "Jolee Erickson and Abby Riggs both showed amazing hustle, and our setters, Mya Smith and Megan Alberty, did a nice job running the floor.

"Overall, I was proud of our effort."
