Vikings thump North Valley in opener, 48-14

Siuslaw senior quarterback Beau Erickson

Siuslaw senior Beau Erickson's one shot as the Vikings' starting quarterback may be one for the ages, based just on one half of play.

Erickson, the understudy to all-star Elijah Blankenship for three seasons, passed for four touchdowns and ran for a fifth — all in the first half — to lead the 3A No. 9-ranked Vikings to a 48-14 victory Friday over the North Valley Knights at Hans Petersen Memorial Field.

Siuslaw (1-0) opens league play this coming Friday at Sisters. Kickoff is 7 p.m. North Valley (1-1) is at Cottage Grove.

Sisters (0-1) opened its season Friday with a 16-7 loss at Madras.

The Vikings wasted no time Friday getting on the scoreboard, going 60 yards on five plays, capped by a 10-yard Erickson to senior wide receiver Braydon Thornton TD pass at 10:28 of the first quarter.

It was the first of three touchdown connections between Erickson and Thornton in the game.

Erickson hit Isaac Garza for a 20-yard scoring play at 5:24 of the first quarter as the Vikings built a 14-0 lead.

Siuslaw put 21 points on the board in the second quarter on Erickson to Thornton touchdown plays of 91 and 19 yards and a 7-yard TD run by Erickson.

Thornton's 91-yard touchdown receptionas the third-longest in school history, surpassed only by Joe Hill (97 yards in 1978) and Jared Kreil (93 yards in 2004), according to Viking football historian Don Hunt. Josh Thomas-Dotson was bumped down to fourth place (90 yards in 2000).

With a 35-0 halftime lead, the second half was played with the clock on running time.

Siuslaw made it 42-0 after three quarters as senior Camp Lacouture scored on a 3-yard run following a blocked punt credited to Vikings defenders Victor Ayala, Kevin Holloway and Noah Dotson.

In the fourth quarter, North Valley scored on a pair of touchdown passes from senior quarterback Jaydon Twedell to junior tight end Brady Huff, sandwiched around a 27-yard TD run by Siuslaw junior Hunter Petterson.

Lacouture scored an additional six points on the game, making 4-of-5 extra-point kicks and running for a 2-point conversion.

Erickson finished the night connecting on 13 of 18 oasses for 330 yards, Thornton had 7 catches for 210 yards and Lacouture rushed 8 times for 95 yards, all team highs, according to the Vikings' Facebook page.

Siuslaw had 547 yards in total offense — 330 passing and 217 rushing — for an average of 15.6 yards per play.
