Vikings open league play Monday at Marist

The Siuslaw Vikings soccer team opens Sky-Em League play Monday at Marist, a chance to start anew.

The Vikings have taken their lumps in preleague play, including a 9-1 loss Thursday to the visiting Pleasant Hill Billies.

The loss dropped Siuslaw to 1-3, while the surprising and 3A No. 9-ranked Billies improved to 3-0.

"We never seemed to find our footing in this game," Siuslaw coach Londi Tomaro said of the late-night match. "However, there were some bright spots."

For one, senior forward Dante Gallie's goal late in the first half was the first this season allowed by the Billies.

Pleasant Hill entered the match having posted back-to-back 8-0 victories over Elmira and Sutherlin.

"Several players seemed to be off their game a bit," Tomaro said of her Vikings. "The combined effect was disjointed play and defensive recovery."

Another bright spot was the play in goal of senior Kayden Lane, who made 14 saves, 10 in the second half.

The Billies peppered Lane for 25 total shots, 13 in the first half when they took a 7-1 lead.

The Vikings had limited opportunities, with junior Alex Goss and sophomores Braxton Hulet and Dylan Jensen each recording a shot on goal.

"We were hoping to score a few more goals and keep it a closer game," Tomaro said, "but we were unable to create many shooting chances, and those we got were not on target."

Earlier, the Vikings junior varsity played the Billies to a 4-4 standoff.

Freshman Landon Curley had two goals while sophomore Ethan Jagoe and freshman Chuck Nelson had one each.

Siuslaw freshman goalkeeper Sawyer Larson had 10 saves, eight in the second half.

"The back line of Sylas Gorder, Bryan Santos and Berkley Tregoning played solid defense," Tomaro said.
