Lady Vikings finally get to play at home

Siuslaw senior libero Hayden Muller anchored the Lady Vikings defense Saturday at the Sisters Tournament.

The Siuslaw Vikings have played a lot of volleyball in building a 3-3 record. They haven't played any of it at home.

The road show ends Thursday when the Lady Vikings host Marshfield. Before that is Tuesday's Sky-Em League opener at Marist.

Siuslaw will be coming off a Silver Bracket title Saturday at Sisters that included a 2-0 sweep of Marist.

"Overall, it was a great day of ball," Siuslaw coach Kari Blake said of the tournament at Sisters. "Almost all of our families were able to make it over to watch.

"And we had some additional Siuslaw fans show up, and that really helped the girls feel so supported."

The only disappointment of any consequence was failing to make the single-elimination Gold Bracket, losing out by one point to Cottage Grove.

But the Lady Vikings grabbed the Silver Bracket title with 25-23 25-22 victory over Marist in the semifinals and a 25-16, 20-25, 15-9 victory over Vale in the finals.

Sisters, the OSAA No. 1 team in 4A, swept Cottage Grove, Burns and Valley Catholic to claim the Gold.

"Standouts for the day include Hailee Outlaw and Hayden Muller," Blake said. "Hailee connected on almost everything she was set and she put the ball down hard on a number of occasions.

"It really gets the team pumped up when we have a beautiful pass, a perfect set and a hard kill to earn the point. The girls on the bench were coming out of their seats for Hailee after a nice kill.

"Hayden, our libero, killed it in the back row. She was all over the place, diving, rolling and digging up balls from some really great hitters.  Hayden has been working hard on reading the court and it's really starting to come together for her.

"Desi Tupua had an overall strong day, as usual. When the team starts to get down, they often look to Desi to make something happen to get them back on track. She's probably our most dependable player on the court.

"I was proud of all of the girls on Saturday.  Each and every one of them contributed in their own positive way and we played a lot of good, smart ball.

"We start league play on Tuesday against Marist so we hope that everything we have been working on and preparing for pays off for us starting Tuesday."

Coach Blake's summary of the Sisters Tournament:

POOL PLAY
Siuslaw tied Cottage Grove 25-18, 17-25.
Stats/Highlights: Junior middle Desi Tupua led the team with 10 kills and overall great defensive play. Freshman outside Mylee Blake had 5 kills, junior outside, Hailee Outlaw had 4 kills and freshman middle Rhianna Lane had 3 blocks for the Vikings.  Overall, our front row did a great job at getting touches on their attacks and slowing the ball down for our back row. We expected Cottage Grove to come out strong and I thought our team did a great job against a team who really moves the ball around well. I thought our girls played a really smart game and we can't wait to meet up with them again in league play.
Siuslaw lost to Sisters, 25-13, 25-17
Stats/Highlights: Desi Tupua again led the team with 10 kills, followed by Mylee Blake with 7 kills. We know Sisters always has a great team and I think the girls let that psych them out a bit. Overall, we didn't play as strong as I hoped we would, but we still had some really intense rallies and we had a lot of great movement from our back row, but we just couldn't execute.
Siuslaw beat Madras, 25-17, 25-4
Stats/Highlights: Senior setter Zoe Alberty dominated behind the serving line with a team high of 6 serving aces. Zoe started serving in the second set and served for 14 straight points. Mylee Blake led the team with 9 kills and middles, Rhianna Lane and Desi Tupua followed with 7 kills each. We got a slow start in the first set but made some improvements and really played our game in the second set.
Recap: With Cottage Grove and Siuslaw coming out of pool play with an identical win/loss record, the last spot in the gold bracket came down to points. With Cottage Grove beating us by 1 more point in the second set than what we beat them by in the first, CG slid into that last gold spot. Missing the gold bracket by a single point really put it into perspective for us on how important every single point is. While we were disappointed with not making gold, the girls were focused on coming out in the best situation possible in the silver bracket. They were definitely on a quest for a first-place silver finish.

BRACKET PLAY
Single elimination
Semifinals: Siuslaw beat Marist 25-23, 25-22
Stats/Highlights: Again, Desi Tupua gave the opposing team a tough time with 10 kills, 3 blocks and solid defensive play.  Mylee Blake had 9 kills, Hailee Outlaw had 7 kills and Rhianna Lane had 3 blocks to help the Viks overcome Marist in two sets.  Hayden Muller, always an asset as our libero, did a great job on her communication and anticipating the attacks from the other side.
Championship: Siuslaw beat Vale 25-16, 20-25, 15-9
Stats/Highlights: Desi Tupua gave Vale a tough time, leading the team with 15 kills and 3 blocks in an intense game. Hailee Outlaw had 8 kills in the game and Hayden Muller had 17 digs to help lead her team to a 1st place finish in the silver bracket. Alizabeth Norton had a strong game in the front row. Overall, the girls played a really smart game. They were super intense, having a lot of fun and really communicating well with each other on the court. After losing in the second set, the girls came out on fire. You could tell they really wanted to come home from the tournament on a high.
