Siuslaw senior midfielder Jason Garcia provided a little spark in an otherwise tough opening night of Sky-Em League soccer for the Vikings.

The host Spartans punctured the Vikings defense for 29 shots — 18 in the first half when they scored seven goals— as Marist (1-3-1, 1-0) scored a 9-1 win.

Siuslaw (1-4, 0-1) hosts Marshfield (1-2, 1-0) at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Siuslaw High School field.

"Jason was fouled, and on the resulting free kick he made a 40-yard shot and scored," Siuslaw Coach Londi Tomaro said. "The ball hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced down into the goal.

"We gained some momentum from that goal, but unfortunately did not score on any of our attempts."

The goal by Garcia, a first-team all-league player last spring, was the first three meetings with the Spartans, who shut out the Vikings twice last season, Siuslaw's first at the varsity level.

"The team had a positive outlook on the game," Tomaro said, "and is looking forward to the next time we play them."

Siuslaw hosts Marist Oct. 6 in the second round.

In the junior varsity match, Marist won 5-1. The Vikings scored early on a corner kick by freshman forward Nicholas May.

Elsewhere in Monday's varsity league matches, Marshfield beat visiting Junction City, 6-0, and Cottage Grove beat visiting Elmira, 8-0.
