Siuslaw drops 8-2 decision to Marshfield

The Siuslaw Vikings soccer team made some progress Wednesday in an 8-2 loss at home to No. 9-ranked Marshfield.

Next week the Vikings, in only their second year of varsity play, travel to Junction City on Monday and to Elmira on Wednesday, hoping to build on that progress.

Siuslaw beat both Junction City and Elmira last spring in the Vikings' first varsity season.

"Before the game I told the team I wanted us to score more than one goal," Siuslaw coach Londi Tomaro said. "And I did not want to end the game because of the 8-goal score differential.

"We accomplished both of those things, so we are progressing, albeit slowly."

Siuslaw slipped to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in Sky-Em League play. Marshfield is 2-2 and 2-0.

Marist, 2-3-1 and 2-0, kept pace with Marshfield with an 8-0 win at Elmira. Cottage Grove plays at Junction City today.

Freshman forward Chuck Nelson scored in the first half and senior midfielder Jason Garcia in the second for the Vikings.

Senior goalkeeper Kayden Lane had seven saves and allowed five goals before leaving the game with an injury. Sophomore Derrick Vanduch finished the game for the Vikings.

"As in the past few games, our defense has struggled a bit with keeping the attack away from the goal," Tomaro said.

"There are definitely some things we need to work on, and I think they will become clear to the players once we review the game footage."

Tomaro hopes to build confidence as well as consistency.

"Marshfield got up by a few goals, and we lost a bit of our focus," Tomaro said. "We got a little down."

Bad things happen when confidence wanes.

"When that happens, the tendency of the midfield players is to drop back to help the defense," Tomaro said. "But that leaves the opposing midfield players unmarked in the middle of the field.

"That creates more need for defense because the attacks are allowed to build toward the goal with little resistance."

Earlier Wednesday, the Siuslaw junior varsity beat Marshfield, 7-5.

Eli Tattershall scored three goals, Ethan Jagoe two and Nicholas May and Bryan Santos one each.

"The entire JV team played hard and used great teamwork to get this win," Tomaro said.
