Lady Vikings post four-set victory at Elmira

The Siuslaw Vikings volleyball team spotted Elmira a set Tuesday at Elmira.

Then the Lady Vikings got good and even.

Siuslaw rolled to a 20-25, 25-6, 25-18, 25-21 victory and a share of second place in the Sky-Em League.

The Lady Vikings, 5-4 overall and 2-1 in league, next play only their second home match of the season, hosting Junction City at 6:45 p.m. Thursday at Glenn Butler Court.

Junction City was swept Tuesday by visiting Cottage Grove, 25-17, 25-20, 25-21, while Marshfield beat visiting Marist, 25-14, 21-25, 25-18, 25-12.

Siuslaw and Marshfield now share second place in the Sky-Em at 2-1, behind only 3-0 Cottage Grove.

Junction City and Marist share fourth place at 1-2, while Elmira is sixth and last at 0-3.

Thursday's match begins an important three-game league home stand for the Lady Vikings.

Both games next week are at home, including a showdown Tuesday against Cottage Grove in the final game of the first half and a match with Marist on Thursday to open the second half.

Coach Kari Blake's recap of Tuesday's match:

"Hailee Outlaw led in kills with 10, followed by Desi Tupua with 9 and Mylee Blake with 7. Rhianna Lane had 5 blocks, followed by Desi Tupua, Mylee Blake and Zoe Alberty with 2 blocks each. Meika Shappell had 10 serving aces on the night, followed by Hayden Muller with 5.

"Desi Tupua had another solid game playing all the way around for us.  Along with Desi's 9 kills, she had a few well-played tips for points.  Desi also had 10 perfect passes, 12 digs and 3 assists to lead her team to a win.  I appreciate Desi's control in the game.  She's a smart player who knows when to go for a big kill versus when to tip it into a hole.  She's the calm on the court for her teammates and her contribution is always substantial.

"Meika Shappell, our middle back had a really great game.  She had 21 perfect passes, 7 digs and 2 assists on the night.  Meika had very few errors on defense and her serving was on fire.  Meika not only served for 10 aces, but she had 11 serves in and only 1 missed serve in her 22 attempts.

"Zoe Alberty also played a solid game.  She was having to dig some passes out of the net to keep the ball in play and she just did an outstanding job of keeping her teammates positive.  Zoe is always looking at what we can do to improve and I appreciate her mindset on this team."
