Vikings' road woes continue at Elmira, 2-1

Siuslaw senior midfielder Jason Garcia has five of the Vikings' 10 goals this season.

The Siuslaw Vikings soccer team's tough road continued Wednesday with an even tougher 2-1 loss at Elmira.

The Vikings fell to 0-4 in Sky-Em League play and 1-7 overall. The Falcons are 1-3 and 1-6 with their first win of the season.

"In the first half we applied a lot of pressure in the opponent's end, and had several shots on goal," Siuslaw coach Londi Tomaro said.

The first half ended 0-0.

"Elmira scored first on a long high shot, and gained some momentum from that goal," Tomaro said. "They scored again before we were able to answer."

The answer came in the form of another powerful shot from senior midfielder Jason Garcia, who scored from just inside Elmira's penalty area.

Garcia has five of the Vikings' 10 goals this season, and has scored in each of the past four games.

"In the first half we were doing better at some of the things that have been plaguing us in previous games, for example going to passes and winning the ball in the air," Tomaro said.

"However, in the second half the players were tired and it showed in their ability to get to the ball and to make successful passes."

The Vikings will have two matches on their home pitch next week, finishing out the first half of league play Monday against Cottage Grove and opening the second half Wednesday against Marist.

"We intend to analyze our game play to determine areas for improvement and move forward into the second half of league play on a stronger footing," Tomaro said.

Elsewhere Wednesday in league play, Cottage Grove and Marshfield battled to a 5-5 tie at Coos Bay and Marist shut down visiting Junction City, 3-0.

Cottage Grove and Marshfield share first place at 3-0-1, with Marist a half game back at 3-1. Elmira and Junction City share fourth place at 1-3.
